A behind-the-scenes look at the decisions, trade-offs, and lessons from our first month of building.
Thirty days ago, we had a whiteboard covered in sticky notes and a hunch that we were solving the wrong problem. Today, we have a live product, paying early users, and a roadmap shaped by real feedback instead of speculation. Here's how we got from idea to launch in one month — and what we'd do differently. The Setup: Constraints as Fuel We didn't start with a big team or a big budget. We started with three people, a shared calendar, and one rule: no feature ships unless it serves the core loop. Before writing a single line of code, we spent two days answering three questions: What is the one job our product must do perfectly? Who feels this pain most acutely, right now? What can we cut without breaking the promise? That last question turned out to be the most valuable. Every day afterward, we asked it again. Week 1: Find the Edges We resisted the urge to build. Instead, we talked to 27 potential users, watched 9 of them work through their current (bad) workarounds, and mapped the moment where things broke down. By Friday, we had a one-page spec: the problem, the promise, and a deliberately narrow scope. Key decision: We chose to launch with a single workflow instead of a flexible platform. Flexibility is a trap in month one — it dilutes focus and doubles the surface area for bugs. Week 2: Build the Spine This was heads-down execution. We split the work cleanly: Backend: one data model, one API, no premature abstractions. Frontend: ugly but functional. Real data, real flows, no polished mocks. Ops: automated deploys from day one. We shipped to staging every afternoon. We used a daily 15-minute standup and a shared "blockers" channel. Anything that couldn't be resolved in ten minutes got a decision-maker assigned on the spot. Trade-off we made: We skipped authentication polish and used a managed service. It felt unglamorous, but it saved us an estimated five days. Week 3: Put It in Front of Humans By day 17, the core loop worked end to end. We onboarded five design partners — users who had agreed to give brutal feedback in exchange for early access and a discount. We watched them use the product live, said nothing, and took notes. The results were humbling. Two features we thought were essential went unused. One we almost cut became the most-loved part of the product. We spent the rest of the week fixing the top three friction points and deleting everything else. Rule we followed: If a user hesitated for more than five seconds, that was a bug — not a user problem. Week 4: Harden and Launch The final week was about trust. We: Wrote onboarding copy that explained why, not just how Added basic analytics so we could see where people dropped off Stress-tested the flows our design partners actually used Prepared a simple pricing page and a plain-language changelog We launched on day 30 to our waitlist of 140 people. The first day brought 38 signups, three support tickets, and one bug that we fixed within an hour. Not viral. But real. What We Learned 1. Scope is a product decision, not an engineering one. The hardest work was saying no — to features, to edge cases, to our own cleverness. 2. Speed comes from clarity, not rushing. The days we moved fastest were the ones where the spec was unambiguous. 3. Real users beat internal opinions every time. Five honest design partners were worth more than a month of internal debate. 4. Launch is a milestone, not a finish line. Day 31 looked a lot like day 30: talking to users, fixing friction, and asking, "What can we cut?" What's Next We're now in a tight feedback loop with our first cohort. The roadmap for the next 30 days is short: fix the top complaints, double down on what people love, and resist the temptation to build everything at once. Thirty days taught us that constraints don't limit ambition — they focus it.
